Psychiatrists, like psychologists and other counselors, are interested in understanding human behavior and helping individuals that are suffering to change and develop new skills to better interact with the world and the people surrounding them. However, an important difference is that psychiatrists have undergone medical training and are, therefore, equipped to consider biological causes for changes in behavior, diagnose medical illnesses, and provide pharmacological treatments as deemed necessary, in addition to psychotherapeutic approaches.

Depending on your health insurance type, a portion of your visit may be reimbursed. A detailed receipt will be provided for you to submit a claim to your insurance carrier for possible reimbursement. If you are unsure whether your insurance will reimburse you, contact them directly and inquire whether they reimburse for out-of-network provider appointments.
Medications will be recommended on an individual basis. For some, psychotherapy may be the best treatment option, and medications could be used as an adjunct therapy or not at all. Medications might be recommended to alleviate serious or prolonged symptoms, especially when the benefits of starting or continuing a medication outweigh its possible side effects. Side effects of medications will also be discussed.

Dr. Carolina Aponte Urdaneta specializes in geriatric psychiatry. She and her business partner started a program called The Healthy Aging Revolution, facilitating small groups of older individuals to gather and talk about ways to better their lives.
“We would walk through things that people really need to be doing to have these years be more present, more abled, healthier, and fulfilled,” Urdaneta says.
The concept of happiness prompting a longer lifespan isn’t new: A Harvard study began tracking the health of two hundred and sixty-eight Harvard sophomores—one of which was future president John F. Kennedy—in 1938. The eighty-year-long study dove into the participants’ health and life conditions like career, marriage, and family and showed that close relationships and contentment led to a longer lifespan than fame or wealth.
