Frequently Asked Questions

Please note: all appointments with Dr. Aponte Urdaneta are virtual.

In what ways is a psychiatrist different than a psychologist or a counselor?

Psychiatrists, like psychologists and other counselors, are interested in understanding human behavior and helping individuals that are suffering to change and develop new skills to better interact with the world and the people surrounding them. However, an important difference is that psychiatrists have undergone medical training and are, therefore, equipped to consider biological causes for changes in behavior, diagnose medical illnesses, and provide pharmacological treatments as deemed necessary, in addition to psychotherapeutic approaches.

What happens if I miss an appointment?

Patients must give notice of cancellation at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled appointment. Please call (913-608-9482) to cancel or reschedule an appointment. If a patient misses an appointment with no advance notice given to the office, the patient will be charged the entire amount due for the appointment, including the initial appointment. Health insurance plans do not cover missed or canceled appointments and are the patient’s responsibility.

Do you see only geriatric patients?

No, Dr. Aponte Urdaneta sees both adult and geriatric populations. She is board certified in adult and geriatric psychiatry and has experience working with both populations.

Will insurance reimburse you for your services?

Depending on your health insurance type, a portion of your visit may be reimbursed. A detailed receipt will be provided for you to submit a claim to your insurance carrier for possible reimbursement. If you are unsure whether your insurance will reimburse you, contact them directly and inquire whether they reimburse for out-of-network provider appointments.

Will medications be recommended to treat my symptoms?

Medications will be recommended on an individual basis. For some, psychotherapy may be the best treatment option, and medications could be used as an adjunct therapy or not at all. Medications might be recommended to alleviate serious or prolonged symptoms, especially when the benefits of starting or continuing a medication outweigh its possible side effects. Side effects of medications will also be discussed.

Kansas City Magazine

“How The Pandemic Is Affecting The Mental Health Of Children And Adolescents”

Seniors who live alone have had it hardest of all during the pandemic. “Doing things like going to the grocery store, going to the pharmacy, going to the bank, going to church are what keep them connected to the world,” Urdaneta says. “All of these things have been taken away completely.”

“Get Your Hugs In”

This is an excerpt from an article in Kansas City Magazine; the full article is in the opposite image.

Dr. Carolina Aponte Urdaneta specializes in geriatric psychiatry. She and her business partner started a program called The Healthy Aging Revolution, facilitating small groups of older individuals to gather and talk about ways to better their lives.

“We would walk through things that people really need to be doing to have these years be more present, more abled, healthier, and fulfilled,” Urdaneta says.

The concept of happiness prompting a longer lifespan isn’t new: A Harvard study began tracking the health of two hundred and sixty-eight Harvard sophomores—one of which was future president John F. Kennedy—in 1938. The eighty-year-long study dove into the participants’ health and life conditions like career, marriage, and family and showed that close relationships and contentment led to a longer lifespan than fame or wealth.
